ART: The Practice of Viji Alamwar Reddy
Artist Statement
For forty years, my hands have been collaborators in a continuous conversation between material and mind. From the bold, atmospheric strokes of abstract painting to the tactile poetry of ceramics, my work is an inquiry into how a spontaneous gesture of the brush can inform the intricate structure of a textile.
I have recently made an intentional shift to merge my abstract work with my design practice, deconstructing the wall between ‘fine art’ and ‘craft.’ This synthesis allows me to create holistic environments where a space is treated as a single, coherent composition. My inspiration remains an intellectual fascination with ancient visual codes and the enduring resonance of myth and ritual.
Viji Alamwar Reddy is an Indian-American artist and designer whose practice has evolved over four decades. Beginning her journey in abstract painting and ceramics, she has developed a singular artistic vocabulary that traverses a diverse topography of materials—from raw pigments and tactile threads to metal and clay. Her work is a deliberate exploration of the "liminal space" where the traditional boundaries between fine art and craft dissolve. Today, Viji’s practice is rooted in heritage, sustainability, and the power of slow design. Her philosophy is a harmonious confluence of her creative passions, merging the spontaneous, intricate language of abstract art with the ancient, disciplined beauty of traditional Indian crafts. Whether she is conceptualizing a bespoke interior or a handmade textile, each work is a celebration of natural materials and a deep, multi-generational collaboration with master artisans.

Textile Studio: Drawing with Thread
“ In my textile studio, I work alongside master craftspeople—men and women who have spent decades honing techniques that are both mathematical and mystical. I find myself pulled into the hypnotic world of hand-woven fibers and the rich, evolving patinas of natural dyes. I view the addition of fine hand-stitching as a method of storytelling—an alternative way of drawing. Where I once used pencils or paints, I now use the needle to stratify meaning and texture. These layers of fabric, dye, and mixed media represent the current frontier of my work: a mesmerizing exploration of art that is lived in, touched, and experienced. “
