The Artist’s Residence: A Confluence of Heritage and Horizon
More than a structure, this home is a thirty-year labor of love—a multigenerational sanctuary that has evolved alongside the family it protects. Located at the precise geographic threshold where the river’s current yields to the ocean, the residence is a masterclass in English Colonial Island style, redefined through the lens of Organic Architecture.
The Architectural Vision: From Wright to the East The inspiration for the home’s elevation and spatial philosophy draws deeply from the principles of Frank Lloyd Wright. Viji’s brief to the architect centered on Wright’s mastery of integrating the "built environment" with the natural world.
-
Seamless Transitions: Just as Wright sought to dissolve the barrier between interior and exterior, the home features floor-to-ceiling vistas that pull the lush gardens and shifting water views into the living heart of the house.
-
The Geometry of the Roof: The home’s dramatic, wide roof structure is a direct nod to the Japanese influences found in Wright’s early work. These expansive eaves serve a dual purpose: they provide essential shade in the tropical Florida climate and echo the evocative, tiered vernacular of South Asian terracotta roofs. This architectural bridge connects the home’s American setting with Viji’s ancestral roots.
A Living Archive of Space The interior is anchored by high-contrast materiality—collected vintage floor tiles that ground the space in history and hand-carved wooden doors that act as portals between the private and the communal. Privacy and Connection: The large, open floor plan is designed for effortless entertaining but is punctuated by quiet, meditative nooks. A private guest suite commands views of the pool and the river beyond, ensuring that every visitor experiences the "magic of the full moon" and the spectacular Florida sunrises in total serenity. A Workspace of Confluence: Reflecting the professional lives of its inhabitants, the home integrates dedicated studio spaces for both Viji and her husband’s creative practices. These are not isolated pods, but integral parts of the home’s ecosystem where professional inquiry and domestic life breathe together. Textural Layering The ambiance is one of "lived-in luxury." Bespoke Alamwar fabrics and custom-designed furniture are seamlessly woven with antiques sourced from global expeditions and local Florida markets. This layering creates a space that feels evolved rather than decorated—a home that tells a story of travel, ancestry, and the quiet majesty of a life lived in sync with the water.
