Udayanjali, Hyderabad, India
Udayanjali is a masterclass in the complete renovation of an ancestral home. While the project is deeply rooted in heritage, the home has been meticulously updated to provide a seamless experience of comfort, luxury, and modern living. Located in the heart of Hyderabad—a city historically positioned at the syncretic crossroads of North and South India—the design reflects a sophisticated synthesis of history and contemporary pulse.
The Design Philosophy: A Living Archive
The interior serves as a Living Archive, where the weight of multiple generations is balanced by a light, modern touch. Viji has masterfully layered time-honored antiques with the clean lines of Mid-Century Modern furniture, creating a dialogue between different eras of design. The palette is a rich tapestry of silks and textures—elements that are inseparable from the narrative of Indian textile history—used to ground the home’s expansive, renovated spaces.
A Global Curation
Udayanjali transcends geographic boundaries through a highly personal collection of art and artifacts. Here, objects are curated for their aesthetic and historical resonance rather than their original function:
-
The Collector’s Eye: Moroccan prayer boards and a vintage Turkish jacket are displayed as sculptural art, while African carvings sit alongside black-and-white family portraits.
-
Sacred as Aesthetic: Religious icons are recontextualized as fine art, honoring their craftsmanship and the spiritual history they represent.
-
Generational Provenance: Age-old artifacts, handed down through the family, are woven into the daily landscape, ensuring the ancestral spirit remains a vibrant part of a modern lifestyle.
The Sensory Retreat
Despite its location in a bustling metropolis, Udayanjali offers an atmosphere of profound "quietude." The home overlooks a serene private pond and waterfall, an architectural feature that creates the illusion of a remote island garden. This connection to water and greenery provides a tranquil counterpoint to the vibrant, layered interiors, making the home a true sanctuary of memory and elevated modern life.
