Bula
Kavananda, Tampa, Florida
Set within a storied, 100-year-old Florida bungalow in the historic Seminole Heights district, Bula Kavananda was designed as a sanctuary that bridges ancient ritual with modern urbanity. The design is a study in Textural Alchemy—an intentional juxtaposition of raw, brooding elements with the warmth of the artisanal.
To honor the Fijian roots of Kava, Viji transformed the space into a "communal living room" that feels both ancient and effortless. We utilized vertical scale to create a sense of monumental presence, using hand-carved headboards and tribal masks to draw the eye upward, contrasted by low-slung, intimate seating.
The space is anchored by the integration of handmade textiles and bespoke pillows from the Alamwar collection. These pieces serve as a vital tactile counterpoint; their hand-printed narratives and soft textures ground the monumental carvings and moody charcoal walls. The palette is a dialogue between light and shadow—velvety walls serve as a canvas for indigo lighting, handmade cement tiles, and lush greenery. The result is a space that doesn’t just serve coffee and kava, but transports the guest to a state of relaxed, island-inspired discovery.
